Frequently Asked Questions

Why is drinking water important after a massage?

It is vital that you are well hydrated at all times. One of the best tools of preventative health maintenance is drinking at least 2 litres of water a day. The human body is composed of over 70 percent water, and water is involved in nearly every bodily function, including digestion, nutrient absorption, circulation, and waste excretion.

Are there any reasons not to get massage therapy?

There aren’t many. Massage should obviously be avoided over the site of any recent tissue damage, such as broken bone, a bruise or a wound. Care should be taken with deep work on persons with fragile or brittle bones (osteoporotic individuals). If there is any doubt, a physician should be consulted. Be sure to tell the therapist beforehand about any recent health problems, injuries or surgeries.

Do you have to take off all your clothes?

You are asked to undress to whatever point you are comfortable. This means you may remain fully clothed, you may undress completely, or anything in between. Your therapist will leave the room and give you sufficient time to undress. At that time you will get onto the table under a sheet and blanket. During the massage, only the part of your body currently being worked on is uncovered.

Is massage therapy painful?

Massage is a relaxing, pleasurable experience. Even when working deeper on a specific problem such as a sore neck or back, the massage therapist works within the pain tolerance of each person. However, it is not always possible to gauge an individual’s reaction to the first treatment. It is normal to feel what massage therapists refer to as a “good hurt,” but please do not hesitate to speak up if you feel ticklish or feel discomfort in any way during your massage.

How often should I get a massage?

If you are experiencing chronic pain, you may want to schedule 1-2 appointments within a week for a few weeks and then gradually lengthen the time between sessions. Under normal conditions, every two weeks to once a month is recommended for optimal health maintenance. Many people find it beneficial to have a massage once a week.
