ORTHOTICS

What is an Orthotic?

  • An Orthotic is a corrective shoe-insert that aids the body to carry out its function better by adjusting incorrect foot mechanics.
  • Therefore, Orthotics are used extensively to prevent and treat foot, hip, knee and lower back pain.
  • They perform functions that make standing, walking and running more comfortable and efficient by altering slightly the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface.

How are my Orthotics made?

  • Once a 3D model has been take of your feet via a Bio foam impression kit, it is then sent to the lab.
  • When the scan data is received at the lab the required prescription is then decided by the lab technichians with the aid of  advanced cast correction software.
  • This information is then sent to a State of the art CNC Milling machine, where the orthotics are milled out to meet your requirements.
  • All Orthotics have a special micro groove top surface. This top surface creates a non slip surface and allows air to circulate between the foot and the orthotic.
  • It also means that your orthotic can easily be washed.
  • Top covers and cushioning can also be added to orthotics if requested.

Do I need Orthotics?

  • Studies taken across the US and Europe tell us that 85% of the general population would benefit by wearing Orthotics.
  • Medical practitioners recommend Orthotics to their patients in order to treat many foot, knee, hip and lower back conditions.
  • A large number of people simply wear Orthotics because of the comfort derived by wearing them with the added benefit of also preventing any muscular or joint pain.
  • If foot function is important to you in your leisure time or line of work, by wearing orthotics, if they are required, you can dramatically reduce the risk of injury and enhance athletic performance.

Breaking in Orthotics?

  • Although some people adapt to wearing orthotics very quickly, you should adjust to them by wearing them for an hour a day and extending this time gradually.
  • Initially you should not use them for extended activity, including sports, until you feel fully comfortable.
  • The devices should be comfortable and used whenever you are doing the activity that would normally aggravate your condition.

Don't Buy Over-the-Counter (Non Custom Fit) Orthotics!

  • Orthotics are custom fit foot supports.
  • They are created and designed specifically for each individuals needs.
  • They are designed to fit your feet more efficiently than over-the-counter arch supports and balance the biomechanical inadequacies of your feet and legs.
  • Over-the-counter supports are NOT designed based on your biomechanical inadequacies and are supplied as a one type fits all support.

Orthotic Tips

  • Wear shoes that work well with your orthotics.
  • Bring your orthotics with you whenever you purchase a new pair of shoes.
  • Wear socks or stockings similar to those that you plan on wearing when you shop for new shoes.
  • It is beneficial to also go barefoot for some period during the day when you are "healed" from the aggravating condition to aid in strengthening the foot & leg muscles.
  • You may also develop blisters, which can be eased by applying Vaseline to hotspots or friction areas.
  • Do not put your orthotics containing top covers in a washing machine
  • Wash in luke warm water and let dry naturally.

How often will I need to replace my Orthotics?

  • Most Orthotics will last five to 10 years if cared for correctly
  • Orthotics containing top covers will need the top cover replaced more regularly.
  • They need to be changed if outgrown by one-and-a-half shoe sizes, or you have had foot surgery or other trauma to the feet, or if you have arthritis in your feet.

How much will my Orthotics cost me?

I provide Orthotics at a reduced rate to most practitioners.
They range from €270 - €290 depending on whether a top-cover is required.
